Reasearch Into Title of Thriller Films - Dark Knight Rises

Reasearch Into Title of Thriller Films - Dark Knight Rises

I am going to analysis the titles of 3 different thriller films. I am doing this to find out how to create an effective title that will get the audience intrigued so that they watch the film that we are creating. This research will help me create the title and opening credits of the sequence. In this post I will be taking a look at the title of Dark Knight Rises.

 Name of The Film Title

The title of the film is ‘’The Dark Knight Rises”. This suggest that the film could be about a hero of some sort this is because of the use of the word ‘Knight’. This refers to a savior or someone that help others. This suggest to the audience that the main character is going to be saving people maybe from some kind of a disaster. Also, the term ‘Rises’ suggest to the audience that in this film the main character is going to have and issue and he may get broken, but, he is going to rise up again to fight whoever broke him in the first place. This links to the thriller genre because it intrigues the audience and it creates suspense be before the film starts because the audience want to know what the main character will be rising up against.

Design of The Film Title

During the version of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ that I saw there was no film title that said ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. Instead there is a Batman logo that appears before any of the film start. The logo is in broken ice and all of the logo is cracked and broken. This hints to the audience that the ‘Dark Knight’ is going to be broken which creates suspense because the audience want to know what happens to the ‘Dark Knight’.

Additional Information

There is not a lot of additional information compared to the other two films that I have analyzed which are both older films. Before the opening starts there is logos of:

  • Warner Bros Pictures (Figure 1)
  • Legendary (Figure 2)
  • DC Comic (Figure 3)
  • Syncopy (Figure 4)
  • Batman Logo (Figure 5, 6)
The logo appear in a grey and black design which create a serious mood and atmosphere at the start becuase of the lack of colour.

Whole sequence

The opening credits and logos are put over black screen. This is because all of the logos and opening credits appear before the actual film starts. After the opening credits and the logos the film sequence starts. It starts where the previous film left off and it is the aftermath of what happened in the previous film. Also, during this sequence the audience are introduced to the main characters (Bruce Wayne and Baine) (Figure 7, 8).There are two scenes within the opening sequence there is an action packed plane take over (Figure 9) and there is a evening party. The opening is good for the target audience becuase it links the previous film to this one and it introduce the new villan as he does an action packed plane takeover. Also, there are lots of cuts uses to help create the fast paced action.

Sound

The sound is used effectively in the opening sequence to create the right mood and atmosphere for each of the scenes.

Scene 1 - Plane crashing
  • Non-diegetic background music - fast paced matches the action that is happening on screen, drums music and orchestral music.
  • Diegetic Foly sounds - gun shots, plane sounds
  • Dialogue between the characters
Scene 2 - Evening party
  • Non-diegetic background music -slow paced music becase of the topic the characters are discussing, violine music
  • Dialogue between the characters
  • Deigetic Foley sounds - people drinking wine
