Starting The Editing Process

Starting The Editing Process

We as a group have made a start on the editing process. We have started by editing together the moving image of the sequence and syncing it up with any dialogue that we have recorded. We recorded all the dialogue seperatly from the moving image onto a sound recorder so that in editing we could adjust the sound to how we want it. This means that the sounder recorder sound has be be synced with the sound from the camera. Then once the sound is in sync we cut the clip to the appropriate length. After this we add any effects like transitions, for example, we used a fade right at the start of the sequence to face into what was happening.

While We Are Editing

These are some picture of us during the editing process:

Decisions We Have To Make

During the editing process we have to make lots of decisions that will change what the final product is like. So becuase of the effect editing has on the final product we have to make sure that the editing is done correctly. By this I mean that it conveys the correct message, mood, atmosphere, theme or part of the story that we want it to convey.

Here are some video of us as we edit showing us making some of the decisions:

Directing During Filming

During the filming process all four of us in the group acted as directors so we would each say if we should shoot a certain shot again, but, do it slightly differently. Here are some videos of us showing some of the directing that we did as a group. The directing parts of the shot will be cut out during editing to leave only the part of the shot that we want to use.

Organisation

Organisation during editing is key because if the footage and sound that we had shot is not organisation then we don't stand a chance of creating a good final product. For example, you can just import all of your clips onto your editing software (We are using Final Cut Pro X) and be done with organising you clips. But, imagine is you we making a feature length film and all the clips we in a long list with names like 'MOV151' that wound not be very helpful when you are trying to edit. So first you need to import all of your clips. Then the clips need to be named and meta tagged appropriately like 'shot 1 - take 2' as the name of one of the clips. Also, if you wanted to you could create lots of custom bins to put all the clips in and you could name the bins things like 'Scene 1'. Having organised clips means that we will be able to work through the editing process more effectively because we won't have to go through guess what is in each clip.

Picture of some of out clips with correct names. But, we could organise these clips further by putting them in separate bins called 'Scene 1' etc. So that we come be more efficient in the editing process.

Whats Next

So as we are currently in the editing process we need to thing about what we have to do next so that we complete all the tasks for the deadline.
What is next after we finish the moving image editing:
  •  Make sure all the dialogue is in the sequence
  • Create and add the title and opening credits to the sequence
  • Create and add background music to the sequence
  • Create and add Foley sounds to the sequence
